HORNETS CAPTURE DEFENDER

Posted on: Mon 26 Jan 2009

BRENDAN Rodgers has today (Monday) completed the signing of Wycombe Wanderers defender Mike Williamson.

The 6' 3" centre half arrives at Vicarage Road on a three-and-a-half year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Rodgers has made a commanding defender a priority in this January transfer window - and the arrival of the 25-year-old will add further competition for the Hornets in that key defensive area.

Paperwork was completed this morning (Monday) after the centre half passed medical and fitness tests on Saturday.

Williamson began his career with Torquay United where he made just six appearances before moving to Southampton.

He was unable to break into the first team at St Mary's, but a loan move to Adams Park sparked his career into life.

Originally signed by Tony Adams, the deal was later made permanent by former Wycombe boss John Gorman.

He slotted into central defence before a serious knee injury kept him sidelined.

Williamson returned towards the end of the 2007/08 season and captained Wycombe as they reached the League Two play-offs.

The Stoke born defender has attracted interest from a number of clubs but the Golden Boys managed to land the uncompromising defender who has bagged three goals this season.

So far this season, Williamson has made 23 appearances for the League Two club.

In total he has made over 150 starts for Wycombe and has helped them to the summit of League Two this season, keeping 11 clean sheets in games in which he has featured.

Indeed the Wanderers have the most miserly defence in the division, having only conceded 15 goals all season.
