AIDY Boothroyd was more than pleased with the first of his men's pre-season fixtures as Watford ran out 3-1 winners over Boreham Wood.

Moses Ashikodi grabbed a brace and Lawrence Hunter, son of first team coach Martin, grabbed the third to put the game beyond Wood's reach.

Speaking straight after the game, the manager said: "These games always seem to put you on a bit of a loser from the start. If you win it was expected and if you lose then you've just lost to seemingly weak opposition. But as we all know, these are the teams that put on a good show against you.

"We could have so easily not have capitalised on our chances early on and found ourselves on the back foot. But they sat back and if teams do that against us in the Championship then I'll be delighted, but I don't think that will be the case somehow.

"We pushed on and got the goals that we deserved and I'm pleased that we showed that determination. I'm delighted for Moses and also for Lawrence, no doubt his Dad will be a very proud man tomorrow morning in training.

"We've still got a lot of work to do, the games will start to get harder before we find ourselves playing Crystal Palace on August 9.

"There are a few things that we've got to get used to and I'm sure mistakes will be made, but this is the time for ironing them out."
