HORNETS IN THE ALPS - DAY 6
THE day followed the standard formula - breakfast at 8.30am, then training st 10.30am on a soggy pitch. There had again been plenty of overnight rain but thankfully it had abated by the time the session started.
One of the features of this trip has been the remarkable weather. As the town of St Johann (Sankt Johann in German) sits in the middle of an enormous valley formed by the Alps, you can see for miles and miles, allowing you to monitor the clouds and rain storms literally fifty miles away or more.
This also means that conditions can change very quickly - the blackest menacing looking skies can turn to bright hot sunshine and then back to heavy rain in a matter of minutes. We complain in the UK about the changeable weather but this really is a whole new level, as we saw during the recent European Championships.
The session was a relatively light one with team shape the message. The manager wanted to play an eleven versus eleven walk-through and, as there were only 19 players training, one of the teams had Conditioning Coach Martyn Pert at right-back, flanking a central defensive partnership of Malky Mackay and Alec Chamberlain.
The purpose of the game was for Martin Hunter to demonstrate what positions players should take when the ball was in different areas of the field, all part of Aidy's plan to install a new formation for the new season.
It was at a very slow pace to make sure that the messages were clear to the players and afterwards the manager was very upbeat with how his players had understood the lessons.
As usual, it was back to the hotel for lunch and recovery. There was only one training session scheduled so the players were given the rest of the day off to relax around the hotel or pop into the town for some shopping before dinner at 7pm.
After an intense few days since arriving, Wednesday is the only day when there is no training scheduled with a team bonding day planned along similar lines to last year's rafting.
Make sure you return to www.watfordfc.com tomorrow to read how it went.
