WILLO THE MISSED

Posted on: Thu 10 Jul 2008

LEE Williamson is back training and is fully focused on the season ahead after his summer exploits away with the Jamaican national side.

Although his performance as a Jamaican international did not follow through as he had hoped it would because of injury, 'Willo' is still hoping to remain an integral part of the Reggae Boyz set-up.

Speaking ahead of Watford's departure for Austria this week, he said: "Hopefully I can just stay in the [Jamaican] manager's mind and stay in the squad."

Chances seem high for the midfielder as he originally received a phone call from Renê Simões, proving an interest towards him from the start.

Fortunately for the Hornets, Williamson has returned with a strong and positive attitude to begin the pre-season, despite his summer going unexpectedly off plan.

"I got called off to go and play for Jamaica but once I was out there, I trained with the squad but didn't really get to play a game. I got injured in training so it was a short trip but it was a different one and a new experience

"We got through to the next stages of the qualifiers, so hopefully I'm in the gaffer's thoughts and even though he's not really seen too much of me, I can just stay in his mind and stay in the squad."

The summer break seems to have done Williamson the world of good as he returns fully healed, clear minded and ready to get fit.

"With regards to my leg, it was just in training, just a thigh strain really. I just checked and then found a sharp pain in my thigh so that was the end of my trip to Jamaica.

"But now I'm fully fit, I've still got a lot of treatment to have on it because throughout the summer, I didn't have treatment at all, I just rested it. So there's always after effects but we're working on it day-in, day-out. But now I'm back I'll be working 100 percent."

Due to the play-offs last season, Watford returned back in training later than a lot of clubs, which Williamson agreed is what himself and the team really needed.

"It's a long rest, I think we have come back later than a lot of clubs, obviously because of the play-offs, but I feel refreshed and ready to get fit.

"For the amount of hard work we do throughout the season it's important that we get our rest. There's only so much your body can take.

"It's not just a physical thing either, it affects you mentally as well. We had our sights set on promotion and we didn't reach our goal. We've had to come back now and prepare physically and mentally because we're still in the Championship and everyone thought after the good start we had to the season that we would be coming back to prepare for the Premiership."

To accompany his confident outlook on his return, Williamson also took a positive attitude towards the changes made by the manager in the way the team played their few final games last season.

"A lot of teams get used to the way people play and I think that's when you've got to have a bit of a change, You've got to have a bit of flexibility in your style of play.

"I haven't really got a preferred formation, it's down to the gaffer, but having two attacking midfielders probably does suit my game a little bit more.

"I just want to start like I did last season really. It was an up and down campaign regarding suspensions and so on, but I just want to keep that out of my game. I want to go through the whole season without a suspension. And that doesn't just go for me but others in the team, because things changed throughout the season and I think suspensions play a big part in that."

The new attitude that Williamson has chosen to take on return looks promising and will hopefully make for a successful year ahead for him and the rest of the team.
