JOBI McAnuff is salivating at the prospect of being given a license to go forth and play following Aidy Boothroyd's proclamation to reinvent his Watford side as a slick footballing machine.

Those who have benefited mostly from the new style of play have been the trio of wingers, of which McAnuff is one and he can't wait for the season to begin so that the new and improved Hornets can take on the Championship once more.

Having played the better football in the most part over both legs of the play-off semi-finals, Watford still found themselves on the receiving end of a 6-1 deficit - so clearly there are still kinks to iron out - but that's exactly what McAnuff is looking forward to.

He said: "We knew from Sunday that we were capable of causing Hull a lot of problems, so to get the first goal gave us a massive boost.

"It was a well worked move and it was almost as if we'd changed the way we played over night and that's all credit to the manager for instilling that new method into us and the players for pulling it off. So although we didn't get the result, we've been playing a lot better."

One of this season's most attractive sides were West Bromwich Albion, who themselves went out of the play-offs last year. They then went on to take the Championship by storm with their goal scoring prowess. That's now what McAnuff is hoping to emulate.

"Look at West Brom, they started the season slowly, but they believed in their style and then the results and the goals started to come. We have to believe in our new approach and I think we'll be better for it.

"We've got the summer now to lick our wounds and re-build the team and our style. We're going to have to; we've not got much choice in the matter. Sometimes this can be beneficial, look at Derby; even Billy Davies said at the start of the season that he thought they had gone up too quickly for their own good.

"Everything happens for a reason, if we had have gone up playing the way we were playing before then we would have struggled next season. There are times to be direct, but there are other times when you have to be able to get the ball down and play.

"Myself, Tommy Smith and Lionel Ainsworth have enjoyed the last couple of games, not the results, but the way we've been able to express ourselves. Going forward is a massive part of our game and we've really enjoyed the new style of play. We've had a bit more license to play and responsibility.

"Attacking is what we're all about; it's something that the three of us all enjoy. It's a sign of things to come."
