SHITTU: WE SHOWED OUR BELIEF
DAN Shittu got the goal that he craved at the Valley on Saturday, all be it a little more than he bargained for, scoring for both sides.
The imposing centre half who started his footballing career at the Valley, seemingly gifted his former club a present of mammoth proportions when his own goal put them 2-0 up.
But there's nothing more mammoth than the man himself, and so he proved when he stormed forward in the second half to score in the same net with a powerful header. But according to him, he only got half of his dream return sorted.
"It was nice to be able to return to Charlton and score a goal, this is the club that gave me my first opportunity to play professional football. So I got the goal, just not the win that I wanted as well.
"I've got some great memories from my time here, but I did want to take the three points home with me."
Talking about the nature of the Championship, which currently sees Stoke top the pile after a 3-2 win over Scunthorpe on Friday night, Shittu believes that it's still anyone's league
"Everyone has still got a chance in this league, every week it changes. Just as one team goes top, something else happens to knock them off their perch, it's all change every week. It's so tight at the top but it's nice to have a bit of competition.
"We've got 13 games left to play and we're perfectly placed joint top still. It's a case of giving it one final push because we can't afford to see all of our hard work so far go to waste.
"We don't have a points target to hit, we live by the rule that we want to win every game, therefore you could say our target is maximum points. I think we showed that belief here today. Some teams would have pulled it back to 2-2 and shut up shop, but we continued to look for the win and we feel that it was a game that we could have gone on and won."
