WATFORD LFC 4 - 0 MANCHESTER CITY LFC
THE match between Watford and Manchester City had to be delayed an hour due to the match officials being caught up in the aftermath of a serious accident on the motorway.
Watford quickly showed their intentions after only a few minutes into the game when Ashlee Hincks was brought down by the City keeper as she broke free of the defence, unfortunately the Hornets couldn't capitalise on the free-kick. Just a few minutes later Burrows hit a shot from almost 30 yards which just cleared the bar.
It took until only the 12th minute for the hosts to breakthrough, again from a long-range shot by Lisa Burrows, who is currently in fine form. Both teams continued to battle hard but again Watford broke through. This time Burrows played the role of provider with a great ball behind the defence for Hincks to slot away calmly.
Thomas, Lander, Hincks and Burrows all came close with some outstanding attacking play from the hosts, but despite all Watford's possession and good build up play, the score stayed at 2-0 up to the break.
The second half began much as the first had finished, with Lander coming close within minutes of the restart after a fantastic driven pass from Emma Thomas. Moments later Maggs almost completed a great play that started in midfield with Beckett and Wade, only to see her neat chip drift slightly over the bar.
City fought well and put up good opposition throughout the second half but were finally broken down again in the 62nd minute, by what was probably Watford's best team goal of the season. Daniels picked the ball up at centre back and played it down the wing to Hincks, who flicked it nicely to Lander before going for the return. Hincks then drove down the wing and crossed; Maggs dummied it and let it roll through to Thomas who made no mistake with her finish to make it 3-0.
The last goal came three minutes later as Beckett played a lovely weighted ball through for Lander to run onto, round the keeper and a defender, and slip into the net. Watford had a couple more good chances before the final whistle but pulled both wide of the post.
Manager Sian Williams said after the game: "I was very pleased with some of our game today, one or two of our plays would grace any stage and Emma Thomas' goal was a great example of the teams' ability to play quick, high quality attacking football. It was also a great opportunity to see some of the younger and newer players who all played their part."
