25 YEARS TO THE DAY

Posted on: Wed 26 Sep 2007

WHERE were you when the Hornets defeated Sunderland 8-0 in the old First Division at Vicarage Road on this day in 1982?

Today (Tuesday) marks 25 years since the historic victory and four killer goals from Luther Blissett that saw off the threat of Sunderland.

The Golden Boys finished runners up to Liverpool in the old First Division that year while the Black Cats finished in 16th place. Sunderland were managed by Alan Durban while of course Watford had Graham Taylor at the helm.

That victory is still one of the biggest wins for the club - Luther grabbed half the scoreline while Nigel Callaghan and Ross Jenkins netted twice in front of a crowd of 16,744.

The full line up was:

Watford: Sherwood; Rice, Rostron, Taylor, Terry, Bolton, Callaghan. Blissett, Jenkins, Jackett, Barnes.

Meanwhile the visitors lined up with: Sunderland: Turner, Venison, Munro. Atkins, Hindmarch, Nicholl, Buckley, Rowell, McCoist, Pickering, Cummins

If you can remember the result you may also be interested in what else was going on at the time in Britain. The number one record was 'Eye of the Tiger' by Survivor - we're sure you know the one!

If you have any memories of this great result and would like to share them with your fellow Watford fans here at www.watfordfc.com - please email themediateam@watfordfc.com and we will publish a selection of these.
