WATFORD 3 SK CESKE BUDEJOVICE 0

Posted on: Tue 24 Jul 2007

SECOND half goals from Jobi McAnuff, Tamas Priskin and Anthony McNamee sealed a third sucessive pre-season win for the Hornets.

The plucky Czech side proved difficult opposition for Aidy Boothroyd's men and made them work hard for their victory.

Aidy Boothroyd was without Tommy Smith and Adrian Mariappa for the test against the Czech Premier Division side. Both picked up knocks in training and were rested as a precaution. Lloyd Doyley deputised for Mariappa while Bouazza started on the left hand side of midfield.

The Hornets had the better of the opening exchanges in Nicklheim - Clarke Carlisle saw his effort cleared of the line after he hit a hooked shot from six yards out after the 'Orns forced a couple of corners down their left hand side.

SK Ceske Budejovice took a while to settle down and deal with the physical side to the Hornets' play and they were resigned to an early long range effort which failed to test Poom. Bouazza poked his effort wide after 11 minutes after a neat move with Marlon King down the left that started with Jordan Stewart at full back.

Carlisle and the experienced Matt Jackson were the talkers in defence, encouraging their team mates and providing a calming influence on the side. Watford continued to create a number of corners and this looked to be their best chance of opening the scoring. After the half hour mark Bouazza and King forced saves from the SK Ceske Budejovice goalkeeper but they were weren't enough to open the scoring.

As the half progressed though the tide started to turn with the Golden Boys losing their authority on the game. SK Ceske Budejovice continued to press and were quick on the break as the supply line to the Hornets' frontline disappeared as half time approached.

Half time: Watford 0 SK Ceske Budejovice 0

SK Ceske Budejovice had the first chance half but Doyley was on hand to block on the line in the crowded penalty box and then Poom saved well low down as a striker burst into the box.

The Hornets took time to settle but managed to open the scoring on 57 minutes. It was again down the left flank where they found some luck as King broke and headed towards the by-line. He crossed into the path of Priskin, who cleverly turned and saw his shot saved by the goalkeeper, but he couldn't hold on to the ball and Jobi McAnuff was on hand to slot home from a few yards out.

It could have been 1-1 almost immediately afterwards as SK Ceske Budejovice missed from six yards out after the Hornets were caught out down their right hand side.

The second goal came on 64 minutes when Priskin got free of his defender and latched on to a Lee Williamson pass. The Hungarian surged into the area and calmly slotted past the goalkeeper to complete a sweet move for the Golden Boys which delighted Boothroyd and his staff on the bench.

Anthony McNamee entered the field on 68 minutes for Bouazza and added the third with five minutes remaining. The tricky winger had his back to goal and tuned his man and curled an audacious shot over the goalkeeper and into the top corner of the net.

His strike was the pick of the bunch and was popular with the traveling Hornets who had made the trip to Germany to support the side. The majority of the starting line up managed to get 90 minutes under their belts for the first time and this will please Boothroyd as he has one eye already on August 11.
