ROOKERY BLOG: GREAT END TO A STRANGE SEASON
SAYING it's been an odd year to follow Watford is like saying, we all wanted Lloydinho to bend it like Beckham and score against Derby on the last game of the season.
Without question this has been a weird one - from the friendlies at Brentford and Borehamwood, right up to that finale in early May - it's been strange from start to end.
Over this peculiar season we've had three managers, three Chairmen, three first choice 'keepers. Elton's quit, Elton's returned, long balls have gone, free flowing football has come in to replace it.
If that wasn't odd enough, 1980's legend Ross Jenkins was reborn in the form of an unrelated teenage midfielder, and an England legend named Frank Lampard signed on the dotted line.
We've at times looked woeful against the likes of Bristol and Blackpool, yet brilliant going toe to toe with West Ham and Chelsea. Odd.
There's been phantom goals, brilliant own-goals, wise old heads like Graham Taylor and (briefly) Keith Burkinshaw returning behind the scenes, and a new young gaffer warming our jaded hearts, despite the fact nobody in Hertfordshire had ever heard of the name Brendan Rodgers this time last year.
Oh and of course there's also been Mr Doyley's metamorphosis from our out of favour right back to a legendary left back who now goes by the name of Lloydinho.
All this happening in a stadium that's not quite sure yet of how it's being refurbished!
Of course, the surreal nature of following the Golden Boys this year continued to be weird to the bitter end. The last goal of the season simply had to be scored by our lad, John Eustace, for Derby.
I don't think I've ever seen The Rookery applaud an opposition's goal scorer quite like that before. You simply wouldn't get such a warm reaction to a player out on loan (and scoring against you!) at any other club - a timely reminder at why it's so great to follow a club like Watford.
Whether Johnny Eustace stays or goes in the summer, you could tell from his reaction to the cheering, he'll remember that goal for a very long time. No wonder he swapped shirts for a yellow one so quickly after full time!
Oddly in many ways this eccentric year was more enjoyable than last year's push for the Premier League.
It's surely going to be one of the most intriguing off-season's since we last went up, fingers crossed the club will be in position for a more sensible but brilliant season by the time August rolls around.
