AS our crusty East Stand grows mangier by the day, I'd like a quick tongue in cheek moan about shiny new stadiums like Southampton's sparkly St Mary's if that's okay.

These wipe clean lovely stadia are fragrant, big and safer than the baby bunny section at the petting zoo, but would I have rather witnessed Saturday's borderline bonkers 0-3 win in a chocka-block "East Standesque" Dell or that million pound monster they now call home? Give me The dirty ol' Dell every time.

Perhaps the strangest thing for the away fan in these Leicester-MK-Coventry-Middlesbrough-Derby-Reading-Bolton-JJB-Southampton-Hull arenas is the group of "noisy folk" who congregate by the opposition supporters.

It's most odd that in these "endless" stadiums the most passionate home support tends to be a feisty gaggle of fans squished as close to the away fans as humanly possible.

They normally spend all game giving you witty abuse, and largely take it back in good spirit, until someone inevitably goes too far and gets chucked out to a sea of waves and "cheer-e-o" chanting.

It's all thoroughly funny stuff, but never has it been more comical than it was on Saturday. I don't think I've ever spent such a large proportion of a football game giggling with laughter.

Luckily the players were taking things seriously, but for the fans it wasn't just a funny game, at times it was hilarious.

Two superb pen saves in one game? That never happens. The cheeky back heel flicky thing of Tamas to put us 0-3 up? Genius. The Mexican wave, us travelling Hornets tried to get the furious Southampton fans to join in on?

Well, that was probably my favourite moment of the season so far. Especially when the enraged section of noisy Saints calmed down long enough to reluctantly join in.

And as for that bizarre new JJO'T chant, where the hell did that come from? Whoever (high on the fumes of a 0-3) came up with that one deserves a Grammy. I only hope it can be heard roaring out of The Rookery against Cardiff and Wolves...
