NORMALLY for a travelling Hornet there is very little to like about an away day at Crystal Palace. Tickets are pricier than diamond encrusted lobster tails, and their ground is tucked away in such a confusing crevice of Saff Landan, that you can genuinely get to Newcastle quicker from Watford.

Even once you've found the congested corner of Croydon that houses Selhurst Park, you could be stood outside its slightly crumbly husk and still miss it - technically it's disguised as a Sainsbury's supermarket. Who hasn't stood there looking for your ticket as Grannies bash shopping trolleys into your ankles? What's more, the Horns have played at Selhurst approximately eighty billion times before, so the pillar blighted atmosphere of the place packs as many surprises as a dog that barks.

For these reasons, I promised myself never would I return to Selhurst after our glorious 0-3 playoff mauling of the Eagles. What's more an interview I once did with Simon Jordan came up as evidence against him during his court case with Dowie…. I'm probably not that welcome. Hence you could well ask, what the hell was I doing, nearly falling out of the Arthur Wait Stand as Tommy Smith fired the Horns ahead on Monday?

I was clearly in Selhurst, the place where I've tragically seen so many dull defeats for Watford at the hands of Palace and Wimbledon. They place where I had promised never to visit again. I could have been at home, watching it only the telly. I could have been in Sainsbury's buying teacakes with the grannies. The problem was, I couldn't resist the temptation of watching the Hornets thrash a team managed by Mr Neil Warnock.

Selhurst Park

After last season's brave performances and unlucky results, it's nothing short of glorious to see the Golden Boys firing on all cylinders again. And even if it means going to places like Croydon to watch them, it's hard not to go. To be honest, even if Aidy's men were playing in the fiery pits of hell, it would be worth booking a ticket down there, just to see Dorris Henderson pop one past Bielzibub between the sticks.

Season Ticket holder Lee Coan will be bringing you regular updates on life as a Hornet and following the team on the road throughout the season. To see past articles click here.
