ROOKERY BLOG - CLUB VS COUNTRY

Posted on: Tue 18 Sep 2007

IT'S an age old question that's caused rows in pubs amongst football fans for decades. Would you rather see England win the World Cup, or watch your team win the FA Cup? For me, I'd rather Watford even found glory in the Carling Cup. I'd have probably even take an Anglo-Italian win, if they ever bought back that early 1990s gem.

You see, as much as I enjoyed watching England poke six goals into the Wembley nets as the corporate crowd dined on lobster, this recent international break has felt like I'm Pete Doherty going cold turkey. After the horns trampled all over Ipswich like a farmer's welly boot stomping on a Suffolk pat, being made to wait a fat two weeks for our next dose of in form Hornets was cruel bordering on malicious.

Maybe if Ashley Young had of got on the pitch things would have been more exciting for us England supporting horns, but as much as I enjoyed Owen's spectacular goals, and Heskey's brave Hendersonesque performance, it just wasn't as exciting as even Southend away… well maybe that's pushing it.

To help me get through those torrid Watfordless days I won the FA Cup with Watford three times on my Xbox (on one occasion with Danny Shittu playing up front due to a few nasty suspensions). I even found myself smiling at bananas in Tesco, so desperate was I to cheer on something yellow.

When Saturday finally came, I had a bounce in my step and Soccer AM on my telly… then it clocked. Balls! Watford weren't even playing until Sunday. This further day of waiting was agony. I couldn't even laugh at the L*ton score on the vidy-printer as they'd bizarrely played on Friday night. Thank God (AKA Dorris Henderson) that the game was finally worth the wait. And now the games are coming thick and fast… Cardiff (I do love a good "You're just a fat Eddie Murphy chant") and QPR - always a great away day. The only problem now is, when the next England games roll around, Poooooooooooooom will be playing against McLaren's men. Well who the hell do we support then?

Season Ticket holder Lee Coan will be bringing you regular updates on life as a Hornet and following the team on the road throughout the season. Too see past articles click here.
