WATFORD WIN COMMUNITY CLUB OF THE YEAR

Posted on: Mon 15 Mar 2010

WATFORD'S Community Sports & Education Trust has won The Football Foundation Community Club of the Year award at the 2010 Football League Awards incorporating FourFourTwo's Top 50 Football League Players.

The Hornets were joint winners of this Community award alongside Southend United.

The Club received the award at a gala dinner at Grosvenor House, Park Lane on Sunday (14 March) evening in front of 900 attendees from clubs, sponsors and the football industry.

Watford has had a very successful year supporting their community and the judges were delighted that a club with a fantastic track record of community work is continuing to deliver.

The Golden Boys offered around 8,500 different sessions through the year, attracting in excess of 150,000 participants. Programmes they run range from Breakfast Clubs to a state of the art Learning Centre.

One project worthy of special mention is the Watford 'MyPlace' initiative, as this has been a ground-breaking scheme for The Trust, having not been involved in a capital project like this before.

'MyPlace' is a £4.2 million initiative that involves knocking down and re-building an old youth centre into a world class youth and community facility.

It is projects such as this that see Watford's Community Sports & Education Trust continue to evolve and develop, setting the standard as one of the leading community focused clubs in the country.

Alan Keen MP, a member of the judging panel, was particularly impressed with the broad range activities and incredible depth of funding which Watford has achieved.

Watford FC's Julian Winter said: "The bond with the community is absolutely essential, we are a town-based Football Club so it is important that we reach out and take the Club into the community and are fully representative of the makeup of the different sections of our local community.

"Watford has had a great history of our managers, including Malky fully believing in the work in the community and ensures the players fully support the work that we do."

Commenting on the 2010 Football League Awards, Football League Chairman, Lord Mawhinney, said: "Once again, these awards have given us the opportunity to honour those clubs and individuals whose commitment to the game or their local community goes beyond the call of duty.

"The fifth Football League Awards have been an enormous success, and I congratulate all the winners on their achievements."
