WATFORD'S Community Sports and Education Trust recently returned from a tour of Germany armed with silverware after winning one of their two tournaments over the week long event.

The squad, made up from under 12-13 year-old players from the Trust's Player Development Centres, have been in training for the past 10 weeks leading up to the trip.

The ninth Fraport Cup in central Frankfurt was the destination for the boys with top German and European Academy sides such as Eintracht Frankfurt, FC Kaiserslautern, FC Twente from Holland and Swiss team FC Luzern.

The young Hornets started slowly, losing their first game 2-0 to the eventual tournament winners, Eintracht Frankfurt. Then followed two goalless draws, they finally secured their first win on foreign shores with a 2-1 win over tournament runners-up, FC Koln with strikes from Daniel Webb and Terry Piper.

This put the Trust team in equal second place but due to goal difference, they ended up in fourth position. One more goal would have given the boys a play-off place and a chance of a semi-final slot.

The final game was against Swiss side FC Luzern. Thanks to Callum O'Connor for an early strike, the boys finished on a high and it was good preparation for their next tournament.

Congratulations go to Rory Golden, the Trust and now Academy goalkeeper who walked away with the silverware for goalkeeper of the tournament.

Piper and Hall celebrating

Watford then moved onto their next destination, an hour outside Frankfurt for tournament number two at Rodenbach. In hot conditions on the Saturday, they took on some of the best lower league Academy sides and after a slow start, with two goal-ess draws, the tempo was increased after a reality check by the players and a few choice words from the management team!

Goals were needed or it was going to be a complete re-run of the previous tournament.

An 8-0 thrashing for FSV Neuberg saw the goal difference required to take Watford PDC into the semi finals against local side Kickers Offenbach. Again the boys were in excellent form with a goal from Piper securing a final appearance.

The final against our host team, JSG Rodenbach, was one-sided from the start, although it only took a single goal from our top goal scorer for the tour, Piper, to secure the win and trophy!

Well done to all of the players who travelled with Watford's Community Trust staff - you were all a real credit to your team and Hertfordshire!
