WATFORD ACADEMY 2 CHARLTON ACADEMY 1

Posted on: Thu 18 Mar 2010

THE Golden Boys struck late on to snatch all three points in a game of three outstanding strikes.

After the defeat to Aston Villa a week earlier the Hornets were keen to get out of the traps early and within minutes Chez Isaac had already seen a warning shot blocked in the six yard box.

Piero Mingoia cut inside shortly afterwards and linked up with Gavin Massey just inside the penalty area. As Mingoia looked for the lay-off, Massey held the ball up well, turned his man and found Jake Rosier on the right hand side of the box, the winger needed no invitation to shoot and lashed a thunderous strike across the 'keeper for a 1-0 lead.

Watford were clearly in the mood to punish their opponents and Massey was just unable to connect with a cross from Rosier after a sweeping move from their own corner flag.

Mingoia went close again soon after, striking his shot just past the upright. With the game looking out of reach for the visitors, the south Londoners struck back against the run of play.

After a long ball over the top caught the defence sleeping it looked as if Adam Thompson had managed to clear any danger, however after having his shirt pulled the Charlton striker lofted the ball over Jonathan Bond's head to tie the scores.

The goal against the run of play settled the visitors and with just ten minutes on the clock, the match looked destined for greatness.

With Cole Penny making a superb turn in midfield for the 'Orns and then having the vision to find Massey it looked as if Watford would carry on where they left off, sadly Massey's cross shot just avoided those in the middle and was cleared for a corner.

The only way for the visitors into the game seemed to be through Watford's errors and Bond had to save well to keep things level at half time.

After the break the two sides seemed to cancel each other out, and it took another great passing move from the Hornets to create an opening for Mingoia who shot wide of the left hand post.

Sean Murray came on for Rosier and his introduction led to the first real chance of the second half, his long range effort stinging the hands of the Charlton 'keeper.

Murray would have the last laugh, but Charlton spurned two good chances when they should have worked the 'keeper a lot harder.

Massey would see another effort saved and with time running out it looked destined to end deadlocked.

Massey would be involved in the final act of the match, with a hopeful ball played over the top, the striker used his pace to get through on goal. After his effort was well saved, the ball found its way out to the substitute Murray, the schoolboy saw the opening and struck a stinging shot to put the Hornets in the lead with just seconds remaining.

WATFORD: Bond; Yiadom, Fenwick, Thompson, Angus; Rosier (Murray 59), Penny, Brooks, Isaac (Archer 80); Massey, Mingoia. Subs not used: Smith, Bonham (gk), Otshudi.

SCORERS: Rosier (4), Murray (59)
