WATFORD Head Coach Gianfranco Zola has praised the improvement in Matej Vydra after the Czech striker won the npower Football League Championship Player of the Year Award on Sunday evening.
Zola was in central London to collect the award on Vydra’s behalf, with the 20-year-old away on international duty.
The Italian has been impressed with the way Vydra has developed his game, aside from his obvious talent for finding the back of the net.
“Since he has been here he has worked a lot on helping the team in their build-up play and also in defending,” he explained.
“It is remarkable he is doing it now, and he is doing things very quickly.
“You don’t need to repeat things many times with Matej, he picks things up straight away. He has the discipline to do it on the pitch and that has been the best improvement in him.
“He has got a fantastic goal ratio,” said Zola of his striker who has hit 20 goals in 23 starts and 10 substitute appearances in the League this season.
“His strike ratio is one of the best in the country.
“Matej has also become an all-round player. He cannot only score goals but he can also play for the team.
“We cannot say we made him a goalscorer, because he was one before he arrived. He scores important goals and we knew he was a good finisher.
“You know in a one vs. one that he isn’t going to miss. He deserves the award.”
