Pearson: “It’s Important We Deal With This Setback Quickly”

Nigel Pearson refused to get carried away after the team’s six-game unbeaten run, and he will not dwell too long on this defeat either as he insists an even keel is necessary to stay in control of performances and results.

“Tonight was a disappointing situation, but the players have shown an incredible amount of resolve and commitment to getting the right results,” said the Head Coach.

“I’m experienced enough to know you won’t always get positive outcomes. But, providing the players always show the right intent in games and show commitment, that’s going to be the most important thing moving forward.”

The Hornets led going into half-time thanks to Troy Deeney’s header and were only behind for a few seconds of the game’s 95 minutes, as a deflected Tyrone Mings goal won it in injury time for the hosts.

“It’s difficult more or less because it’s the last kick of the game, and I don’t really think we deserved that,” said Pearson.

“We’ve had a couple of decent situations where we had opportunities to maybe extend the lead, but it didn’t quite happen for us. I think going into the last few moments of the game a draw would have been a relatively fair result.

“To be talking about a defeat is quite difficult but, as I’ve said, there are going to be setbacks and tonight’s one of them so it’s important that we deal with it pretty quickly.”

The lack of result was not for want of trying, but a raucous Villa Park pushed their team forward until the death and Pearson accepts that sometimes the fine margins will go against you.

“We didn’t intend to sit back, we’ve had a lot of football, we’ve had the same players playing a lot and it wasn’t our intention to sit back. I think that’s more a testament to Villa for being positive and putting us under pressure,” he said

“But I thought we dealt with it relatively comfortably and I think one of the things you have to realise sometimes is that things won’t always go your way, and that’s what happened in the last minute.”
